West Virginia Chapter of the Western Section IAEI Cordially Invites you to attend the 119th Annual Western Section Meeting Oglebay Resort & Conference Center September 17- 20, 2023 Oglebay Resort History The history of Oglebay can be traced to the late 1700s, when a frontiersman named Silas Zane was awarded a land grant of 400 rolling acres in what is now West Virginia. This land remained in the Zane family until 1812. Since, the land changed hands several times. By 1888, the owner of the record was A. Allen Howell, the father of Sallie Howell Oglebay. When Earl W. Oglebay purchased Waddington Farm from his father-in-law’s estate in 1900, the property was just a 25-acre tract, but the astute Cleveland industrialist gradually developed the property until the farm was almost twice as large as the original land grant. For 25 years, Mr. Oglebay spared no expense or effort in turning his property into a beautiful country estate and a model farm where research in soil culture and crop rotation was conducted. During these years, buildings were added, and much landscaping and roadwork was accomplished. Upon his death in 1926, Mr. Oglebay willed his property to the people of Wheeling, for as long as they “shall operate it for public recreation.” In July 1928, the property was accepted as Oglebay Park on behalf of the people and placed under the governing hand of the Wheeling Park Commission. Today, Oglebay is a beautifully landscaped, 2,000-acre public park, studied by planners worldwide as the only self-supporting public municipal park in operation in the United States. It stands as a successful tribute to Earl W. Oglebay, a notable achievement of the Wheeling Park Commission, and a credit to the many benefactors and organizations involved in its growth. While Oglebay is supported mainly through guest revenue, the park offers more free activities than any other operation of its type in the country. Weather September in Wheeling, West Virginia, has an average temperature range between 55°F and 76°F. Travel The meeting is at the Oglebay Resort, 465 Lodge Drive, Wheeling, WV. Guests must call the hotel at 304-243-4000 and specify they are with the International Association of Electrical Inspectors Booking ID 39310 to make a reservation. The hotel is a one hour drive from the Pittsburgh International Airport, which is serviced by Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier and United. The hotel does NOT provide shuttle service. Attractions Oglebay Resort has two golf courses and driving range, the Good Zoo, and Oglebay Glass Museum and Mansion Museum. The City of Wheeling is home to the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum, WV Independence Hall, and Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Companions Program Monday’s activities will include a trolley guided history tour of Oglebay including the Oglebay Museum (home of Cleveland industrialist Earl W. Oglebay), Carriage House Glass Museum with glass blowing demonstration, and Bissonnette Gardens. Monday afternoon will feature a box lunch and Oglebay’s Good Zoo – Home to 50 species of animals, 20 of which are rare or endangered. The Good Zoo is the only institution in the state of West Virginia accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Tuesday’s activities will include Minute to Win It (companions take part in a series of 60-second challenges to be the first to finish a challenge or to see how many times they can complete a task in one minute) and other games. Following a buffet lunch, companions will participate in a Paint & Sip, led by artists from the Wheeling area. On Wednesday, as has become the tradition of the Western Section, companions will hear a presentation by Tanya Diable, President and Founder of Joey’s P.A.W. Founded in 2017, Joey’s P.A.W. is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that seeks to help dogs whose quality of life has been altered by abuse, neglect or medical illness that inhibits their ability to walk or run freely. The organization is committed to fitting dogs with prosthetics and wheelchairs (P.A.W.), aiding in adoption, and changing people’s perception of special needs dogs through education. Education Program Several educational programs will be presented as well as the always popular Code question and answer sessions, where your questions can be answered by nationally recognized code experts.
